Maimana kilims are a proud product of the Frayab province in northern Afghanistan, with their name derived from the historic city of Maimana, a key trading hub along the ancient Silk Road. These kilims reflect centuries-old weaving traditions passed down through generations of tribal artisans. Their distinctive geometric patterns and bold designs are influenced by the nomadic lifestyle of the region, where practicality meets artistry in textile creation. The Maimana region is known for its semi-arid landscapes, where the weavers source high-quality wool from local sheep, spin it by hand, and dye it using natural substances, often inspired by the earthy hues of their surroundings. These kilims are flatwoven without a pile, a technique that makes them lightweight, reversible, and perfect for diverse applications, from floor coverings to wall hangings.
Maimana kilims are celebrated not only for their craftsmanship but also for their cultural significance, representing the resilience and creativity of the Afghan people. Whether used in modern or traditional interiors, they offer a connection to the rich history of the region and a timeless aesthetic that honours their storied origins.

Meet Najaf
The founder of Najaf Rugs, Najaf Mazari, learned the intricate art of making rugs at the age of 12 in his hometown of Mazar-E-Sharif in Afghanistan. In 2001, he arrived in Australia as a refugee and built this business from the ground up six months after his arrival. His passion for rugs still shows in every single rug he sources. There's no better decision than buying a rug from someone who knows every rug's ins and outs and how to weave one.
